Aging seems to be getting worse not better, he said.

He's been practicing for 30 years in Rockland County. Then it was a rarity to see a patient that young with arthritic symptoms, he said. "Now, it's commonplace. Neck and back pain are the second leading reason why people leave work early, next to the common cold," Cocilovo said.

Why? “People are more sedentary. They sit at desks then come home, eat a big meal, and sit on the couch. They don’t move as much. They don't exercise or exercise enough."

But the good news is there are therapies to treat pain.

Not just arthritis but a host of painful disorders are treated by Cocilovo and Gilbert Rodrigues at the practice where patients have come in as young as two-days-old and as old as 94.

"I feel fortunate to be treating the kids of kids I've treated since I started out," Cocilovo said.

He explained the "whole" philosophy of the practice.

“Patients new to chiropractic care tell me what they’ve heard. The most common misconception is that they (chiropractors) keep you coming back. I tell them, ‘If you’re going to a restaurant to have a great Italian meal, you go back because it makes you feel good.”

Patients that come to the New City practice not only receive manual spinal manipulation, they can have massage and physical therapy too, and new therapies like “decompression” the “buzzword,” which is a machine that relieves pressure on nerves of the spine that don't cost extra, but are part of a routine office visit, Cocilovo said.

Moreover, the aim of all therapies is to lead patients to wellness.

In Western medicine, people often don't go in to see a doctor until they have symptoms or are sick. In chiropractic treatment patients are treated for the root of their pain, not just the symptoms.

So in addition to hands-on manipulation, their treatment plan could include massage, physical therapy, stretching and exercise.
