David Tepper was born on September 11, 1957, to a Jewish family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents were Roberta, an elementary school teacher, and Harry, an accountant. He is the second of three children;

During his teenage years, Tepper attended Peabody High School before pursuing a degree in economics at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1982, he furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

After graduating in 1982, David Tepper secured a position in the treasury division at Republic Steel in Ohio. He was then hired by Keystone Mutual Funds in Boston after two years.

In 1985, he joined Goldman Sachs as a credit analyst and quickly rose to the position of head trader in just six months. He played a crucial role in helping Goldman Sachs weather the 1987 market crash. However, he left the company in 1992.

At the start of 1993, he and his fellow Goldman Sachs employee Jack Walton joined forces to establish Appaloosa Management. The firm specializes in investing in public stocks and fixed-income markets globally and experienced impressive growth in its initial stages.

Within just six months, it yielded a 57% return on its investments and by 1996, its assets had grown from $300 million in 1994 to $450 million in 1995 and $800 million in 1996.
